Year 1 is an exciting transition from Early Years to Key Stage 1. Children enjoy a rich and broad curriculum that uses a balance of learning through play, continuous provision and more the formal learning of reading, writing and maths. They have daily phonics lessons and read regularly 1:1 with an adult. They learn letter formation and handwriting skills alongside early writing skills and begin to write short stories and information. Emphasis is put on Language and Communication curriculum to develop oracy.
Children enjoy topics such as Castles, Africa and Going Wild, that allow learning to be purposeful, broad and balanced. Our unique Garden School sessions teach children resilience, creativity and confidence as well as supporting a range of curriculum areas including Science. Children are taught Music and Computing by specialist teachers in weekly lessons. P.E. is taught twice a week by our specialist Sports’ Coach.
