Arts Week 2016

Sulivan celebrated the Arts this term with a special arts enrichment week for the whole school. See below for a brief synopsis of the activities that each phase took part in. An art gallery displayed all the wonderful work for parents and carers to visit.

Nursery and Reception classes

Our Arts Week began with a thoroughly enjoyable visit from Mr Junkman who let the children play on all the instruments he had made out of old tyres, wheels and saucepans. Children learnt how easy it is to make instruments out of junk materials, which helped them later on in the week when their parents came in to make instruments with them at the Junk Instrument Parent Workshop. Children and parents worked very hard to create shakers, string and bell instruments, and were very proud of their creations.

At the end of the week children from all four classes in the Early Years Foundation Stage (the Blackbirds, Robins, Wrens and Swallows), worked together to create an enormous summer flower for their Art Attack!  The children had to rely on strong team work to make the flower out of logs, fabric, hoops, plastic cubes, wooden blocks, and even a tyre. It was wonderful to see the children’s faces light up when they had created the end result and got to view the flower from the stage.  What a brilliant and rewarding way to end a fabulous Arts Week!

Year 1 and 2

Children in years 1 and 2 started their week by making a large Art Attack in the playground of a sloth. Back in the classrooms, they then painted sloths and made animal puppets. Later in the week children took part in a rainforest dance and worked in small groups to come up with their own dance. On Thursday Jo May visited the school to teach them how to play the spoons. The week concluded with children painting  leaves and parents were invited to come in and see there work of the week.

Years 3 and 4

Arts week started dramatically in Years 3 and 4 with the story of Beowulf, which linked to our new topic of Anglo Saxons. We became excited by the mythical creature that Beowulf would be fighting and decided to imagine what it could look like.

Using our artistic skills we created new species by choosing features of different animals and combining them to create our own mythical “Beowulf Beast”. Some parents joined us in our classes and we worked together to create our artwork.

We worked as a team to complete a giant “art attack”. We decided to create the Sulivan badge using different materials from around the school. The finished article looked very impressive!

Towards the end of the week, we worked in pairs or individually to create habitats for our mythical creatures. We let our imaginations run riot to create these amazing models.

Years 5 and 6

Year 5 and 6 entered the land of The Vikings! The children fully immersed themselves in the world of The Vikings using their artistic skills. They were busy making Viking helmets, Viking long boats and took part in a recreation of Viking battle scene through the medium of dance. The children also took part in a giant art attack, where they used the bodies to create the shape of a Viking boat.

The children also took part in a very special samba workshop. They got to experience a wide range of new instruments and had the opportunity to learn different samba rhythms. The children will be showcasing their samba talents at our end of year summer concert.
