Autumn Term 2018 – Once Upon a Time
“Reading is my favourite, and maths… and science”.
Louis, Year 6
When children enter KS2 in Year 3, they are ready for new challenges, roles and responsibilities. The emphasis on reading, writing and mathematics continues in KS2 with a structured timetable of literacy, mathematics and daily guided reading lessons. In the afternoon, children enjoy discovering the subjects of Science, ICT, History, Geography, Art, DT, PSHE, RE and PE. A range of successful topics stimulate the children’s imagination and thirst for knowledge. Lessons are calm and purposeful and children enjoy learning in our stimulating and safe environment. Additional small group learning is delivered for children who require extra support as well as for those who are gifted and talented, to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed and excel.
Topics in KS2 include The Victorians, Water, Water, The Natural World, The Ancient Greeks, India, World War II, and The Romans. Children learn through drama, research, investigating sources and many enriching educational visits to London’s museums and workshops. In History the children gain a good knowledge of chronology and they carry out fieldwork in the local area and beyond in Geography.
Alongside focussing on developing thorough knowledge and understand in all areas of the curriculum, KS2 continue to learn through enquiry and investigative projects.
Science is taught in blocks throughout the year and the children are taught how to investigate, test and form conclusions about a range of scientific concepts. We are able to teach all areas of science in our outdoor spaces and nature garden.
Children are able to apply computing skills in all areas of the curriculum, and are also taught specific skills in our Computing suite and on netbooks and ipads in classrooms. This allows them to apply Computing skills in all areas of the curriculum. Use of digital cameras and video cameras is commonplace thorough the school and contribute to many exciting animation and film projects in KS2.
Classes are taught by a specialist music teacher. Children learn to compose and respond to music from a range of genres. Signing at Sulivan is an important part of developing self confidence. We have recently been awarded a Gold Sing Up award and children have countless opportunities to perform in school, in inter-school events and in public. Along with singing lessons, children are able to join two choirs in KS2. They are encouraged to learn an instrument from Year 2 and these take place in our music practise room. Children learn the guitar, trumpet, clarinet and the keyboard.
PE is an important part of developing a healthy mind and body. Dance, Games, Gymnastics and Swimming is taught in KS2. Children have two PE lessons a week and are able to join teams that compete in various competitions through the year. We have a specialist P.E. teacher who teaches a range of skills in curriculum time and runs after school clubs 3 days a week.
